The National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the National Task Force on Viral Hepatitis, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), is coordinating a Dissemination Meeting on Viral Hepatitis Guidelines at the NAC Secretariat.
The meeting aims to strengthen healthcare workers’ knowledge and practical skills in the diagnosis, treatment, clinical management and monitoring of viral hepatitis, particularly hepatitis B.
Speaking at the meeting, Professor Edford Sinkala, Chairperson of the National Task Force on Viral Hepatitis, highlighted that viral hepatitis remains a significant public health concern in Zambia, contributing to liver-related illness and deaths. He noted that hepatitis B can progress without obvious symptoms, potentially leading to serious complications if left undiagnosed and unmanaged.
The guidelines provide evidence-based guidance and practical tools to support healthcare workers from First-Level Hospitals in delivering consistent, quality care to people affected by viral hepatitis.
The initiative underscores the importance of strengthening healthcare workers’ capacity and collaboration among Government and partners to improve viral hepatitis care and reduce its burden in Zambia.
NAC remains committed to working with Government and partners to improve coordination and support a stronger multisectoral response to viral hepatitis.
