A five-member team of health related professionals from Charles R Drew University (CDU) in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America today 12th September 2022, visited the National AIDS Council to explore ways of scaling up and sustaining the Girls Rise Up Project run under the support of the University.

Led by Deborah Prothrow-Stith who is Professor of Internal Medicine, members expressed a desire to make the project sustainable while leveraging on synergies with other programmes championing the welfare of adolescent girls and young women.

Vice President Ms Mutale Nalumango says Zambia risks a resurgence of the HIV epidemic based on what she describes as potential complacence on prevention measures because the virus no longer presents physical negative signs on those living with it.

Health Minister Sylvia Masebo has encouraged HIV negative women to take another HIV test after giving birth because some of them become infected with the virus while breastfeeding thereby posing a risk of passing the virus to their children.

Zambia will be commemorating the National HIV Testing Counselling and Testing (HTCT) day on 15 August, 2022 under the theme Let’s Stop HIV Together! #GetTestedToday. The Ministry of Health through the National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council and partners is spearheading preparations for this important national event whose theme means working together to ensure that no one is left behind.

National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC) Director General Dr Connie Osborne has led staff at the head office in Lusaka in testing for COVID-19. The tests were carried out on Wednesday the 13th of January 2021 by the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI)’s Disease Surveillance and Rapid Response team. The decision to test everybody was arrived at as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of the virus after two COVID-19 positive cases of staff were reported at the national office.

The National HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Council (NAC) has asked the National Assembly of Zambia to play a catalytic role in improving sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people under the age of 18 years who account for 53 percent of the country’s population by supporting a wide spectrum of young people centred programmes.
