Zambia recently submitted an additional funding request amounting to 5% of the country allocation (US$ 15,762,520) for COVID-19 diagnostics and oxygen support to the Global Fund. Thereby, it was key to demonstrate an additional funding need based on epidemiological situation (COVID-19 upsurge), absorptive capacity, programmatic disruption, and ability to implement and put funds to work immediately.

Out of the above funding request, the Global Fund approved US$ 15,412,951, bringing the total funding for COVID-19 to US$ 112,078,332. The grant funds in this request will be managed by the two existing Principal Recipients, Ministry of Health (US$ 11,947,486) and Churches Health Association of Zambia (US$ 3,465,465) and their Sub-Recipients. The deadline for the use of the funds is the 31st December 2023.
The following positions were not approved by the Global Fund:
- USD 210,671 in Human Resources costs including 10 oxygen attendants with the
Ministry of Health and 3 lab positions with the Churches Health Association of
Zambia - USD 90,725 in SAR-Cov 2 Genomic sequencing and Bioinformatics.
- USD 12,173 across various Health Products and non-Health Products lines, due to
alignment of the budget to the final HPMT.
